Don't Forget the Oatmeal!

As the creative thinker I feel I am, so too often I am reminded of my unfortunate heritage. I tend to become enthusiastic about ideas that will bring me ecstatic happiness and forget about logistics, something my mother frequently suffers from.

Yesterday was the big day that I decided to brew the Chinook IPA kit that I've owned for over a year, I never seemed to find that right moment to bust into it! Shannon and I started by cleaning and sanitizing the equipment, as the direction sheet instructed us to do. We followed the instructions step-by-step and were having a blast! Until we realized... we had the wrong yeast  You know, the stuff that induces fermentation and is responsible for alcohol content in beer. Luckily we realized this with 30 minutes to get to the brewing-supply store before it closed for the day.

When we returned, the remainder of the brewing process went smoothly and we even made brownies from scratch. Despite our success, I couldn't help thinking about one of my favorite children's books. Don't Forget The Oatmeal is the story of Ernie and Bert from Sesame Street going to the grocery store with a list of items to buy, including oatmeal. In addition to the list, Bert tied a string around his finger as a reminder to get the oatmeal. When they returned home, they sort through their groceries, and you guessed it! They realize they forgot the oatmeal!
